This post is part of the HEALTHY ESSENTIALS® 2014 program by Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. and The Motherhood, who sent me a box of products and compensated me for my time. Opinions, experiences and photos shared here are all my own, and I hope you enjoy them.
This time of year is extremely tempting. We are all tempted by delicious treats, candies, and it is way too easy to slip down an unhealthy path while we’re all too busy preparing for the holiday celebrations to fully notice it happened at all. I know all of this first hand. It tends to happen to me every year around this time. I know in my mind how to prevent it all and to stay healthy but I have always needed that extra push to keep my head up and moving forward.
I need to put my head up, and ignore all the delicious treats I’m surrounded by. I will eat them on Christmas. I can hold out. (and THAT is a self pep talk!)
5 Tips for Staying Healthy During the Holidays
1) Ditch the sugary drinks and drink more water.
It can be incredibly tempting to load up on the extra large (and sugary) seasonal drinks. Put the temptation aside and drink your coffee at home, and make sure to drink more water. I have to constantly remind myself to drink water. When I don’t, though, I feel horrible. The benefits are so much better in the long run.
2) Don’t bake treats right away.
I’m following this one religiously this year. Normally I start making cookies and fudge as soon as December hits. This year I’m only going to be baking and cooking goodies in the week of Christmas. This way I don’t find myself eating these sugary treats every single day, and making my waistline pay for it. Plus I’ll actually give them away like I plan on doing!
3) Don’t let the stress get in your way.
Staying healthy doesn’t always have to do with what you eat or drink. Stress levels tend to be on the rise this time of year, and it is extremely important to take care of yourself. Make sure you set time aside for rest and relaxation. Don’t run yourself into the ground trying to make everything perfect. Your health is much more important than the perfectly wrapped presents.
4) Let shopping be your exercise.
You may look like the mad woman scoping out the best deal, but power walking while shopping is a very effective way to get a workout in. You can also opt into parking farther from the door to get some extra steps in. Keep a pedometer handy to stay motivated and active. On top of this, don’t stress too much about making time for a full fledged workout.
5) Be sure to enjoy time with your friends and family.
Don’t let the business of the season get to you so much that you forget to enjoy the little things. This entire season is about being with our friends and family, don’t look back and regret not letting yourself enjoy the time. Just because you are hosting, or have a lot of things to prepare, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get to enjoy the holiday as well.
