Making things for my mom is not just something I do on Mother’s Day, but year around. The beauty of the relationship I have with my mom is she does the same exact thing. We are constantly surprising each other with random (and sometimes silly) homemade gifts.

One thing I have been dying to make for my mom for a long time was an Essential Oil Diffuser Necklace. We both have always wanted one so we can diffuse our favorite oils no matter where we go. Our only problem was we did not want the traditional tan clay. After doing some digging I found black clay at Michael’s, and I knew it was meant to be.

Emma and I went to our trusty crafting spot (the front porch) and went to work. It was so much fun Bryan joined in as well!

Essential Oil Diffuser Necklace Tutorial

This is an extremely messy activity, so I would head outdoors or lay a tarp down. Messes are inevitable, even I made a huge mess. It’s quite fun!

Here is what you are going to need:

  • Clay (preferably self-hardening so there’s no need to bake it!)
  • Scissors
  • Straw
  • Stamps
  • Water
  • Chain (or yarn, for the necklace)

Start by breaking one-inch pieces of clay off so there’s no need to try and size them when your fingers are slipping all over the place. Tip: break off a piece of clay roughly the same size as your stamp.

Wet the tips of your fingers, then start massaging it into the clay. Once it is pliable, roll it into a ball. This is the part Emma loved the most. We decided that we would both make one for my mom, each with a different stamp.

When Emma started rolling her clay into a ball at first, she refused to wet her fingers. After she saw me do it, there was no holding back. She loved the feel of squishing it between her fingers.

After you’ve molded your clay into a ball, place it into the palm of your hand and slowly press the stamp down. The clay is still slightly slippery so use your hand as leverage for the stamp.

From there mold the back of your pendant so it is flat, you want it to lay flat so it is comfortable and looks nice when worn. Push any extra clay towards the top of the necklace, extending it out over the edge of the stamp. Mold the tab you’ve just created so it is even on all sides, then push the straw through to make a hole. Tip: Make sure you wet your fingertips if the clay is no longer easy to manage.

After you’ve made the hole you may need to reshape it slightly so it is perfect again. Let the clay sit on the stamp for a few minutes. You want it to dry out a little, but not be dry enough that it cracks when you remove the stamp.

Carefully lift the edges of the stamp, if you see cracking add a little more water and wait again, but for less time. If the edges are still pliable as you lift them, slowly remove the entire piece of clay. You will need to reshape the pendant, and flatten any rough edges.

Now all there is left is to wait for it to dry fully. I like to leave mine alone for an entire weekend, just in case. After the (excruciating) wait, add your pendant to your favorite chain, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, and be amazed at how wonderful it smells throughout the day.

I know my mom is going to love her necklaces. I can’t wait to give them to her.

Celebrate Mom Every Day with Pampers

When I think about my mom, I feel so much love. The memories, smiles, hugs, and encouraging words have all added up to more than I could ever hope to give my children. My intellectual side tells me that this is how my girls see me, but my emotional side tells me I am nowhere near as good a mom as my mother is.

I just need to keep working towards it.

  16. I know it seems like this would be common sense, but just to be sure, if I switch to a clay diffuser, would I then no longer need to mix my essential oil blend with almond oil?
