So here we are, mid-winter. It’s cold, rainy and an overall gloomy feeling is in the clouds.

Let me just say,

Winter is

But this year going back to school, for my kids, reminded me of another family tradition.

Inevitably, Little Johnny Doe is going to catch a cold. He then will sneeze into his hands and wipe his nose with his sleeve. Because he is such a nice boy and very friendly, my daughter is going to play blocks or some other school activity with him.

That is so great! Tragically though, it means there is a strong definite chance that she will get a cold too.

But you know as well as I, they are not the only candidates in the race for getting sick. Did you touch that doorknob Mrs. Smith turned? She’s in bed with a cough. Did you pay the cashier with cash? Lord knows what was on that gross currency.

It’s true we do everything we can to prevent this from happening. Teaching strong hygiene and proper cold care tops the list. Vitamin C, plenty of liquids, the list is long. I am sure you have your prevention tricks of your own.

But through it all, we still get sick!

No one I know, for all they do, never gets sick. So here we are mid-winter and my family AND extended family have all been sick. More than once. This I don’t love. I am always putting peppermint essential oil on everybody.

Stuffy, congested, and miserable. The journey begins to find some relief.

For me, that points straight to Walmart. Where the lovely, life-saving line of Vicks NyQuil products wait for this same time every year. My list has a few items at the top: Vicks DayQuil, cough drops, hot tea, juices, and Vicks NyQuil Severe because let’s face it, when it’s me that’s sick, it’s severe. Every. Single. Time.

When I get out to the car I don’t even wait to get home. I crack that DayQuil pack open like a black hat hacker and down the first dose. It may be psychological or maybe not, but I instantly start feeling better. Just knowing how well this med is going to work gets me on the road to feeling better. Nasal/sinus congestion, fever, sore throat, and oh that nasty headache I always get with a cold. All of these begin to subside.

If I time it just right so that when the day is coming to a close and it’s time for bed, my DayQuil meds are wearing off and the real magic can begin. The soothing, deep and restful slumber that comes with NyQuil Severe. My cough, which is usually my worst symptom, is quiet and the soothing liquid coats my sore throat and soon without any effort, I am fast asleep. And a full nights rest it will be. I sleep better sick with a dose of NyQuil than I do when I am well without it!

Shake, stir, rinse and repeat for the next few days and cold over.

Forget about those generics and wanna-be products too. You want to save a buck? Go to Walmart. They run the lowest prices in town on NyQuil and we all know the true confidence is in the tried and true Vicks DayQuil and NyQuil Severe. Anything less just doesn’t cut it.

So here we are, mid-winter, cup of hot cocoa (with marshmallows), snuggled in a warm blanket and feeling mighty fine! Until next year…

  1. Vicks really saves my day! I can’t be sick and take care of the kids and house. Especially now that I’m volunteering in Landon’s class twice a week… I’m surrounded by an extra 28 kids! Who pretty much don’t cover their mouth when they cough. I don’t even want to think about the germs!
